Hurworth Grange CIO

Hurworth Grange CIO is a charity set up to run and maintain Hurworth Grange Community Centre for the benefit of the people of Hurworth and the surrounding villages.

The Grange has excellent facilities including, car parking, a fully licensed bar and two large function rooms. Ideal as a venue for Weddings and any other special occasion. The Fletcher Hall, the larger of the two function rooms has a seating capacity of 120, the smaller Hadwin Lounge has a seating capacity of 50. Please contact us to arrange viewings and to discuss scale of charges for your event.

 HISTORY OF THE GRANGE

Hurworth Grange was built as a wedding present in 1875 by Alfred Backhouse for his nephew James Edward Backhouse.  The architectfor the building was Sir Alfred Waterhouse.

 The poet Rudyard Kipling visited the Grange in the 1890's where he saw a Roman sarcophagus (a stone coffin) aquired by the Backhouse family, possibly when the railway to York was built.  This inspired him to write the poem 'The Roman Centurion's Song'.  The sarcophagus was later housed in the archives at St Cuthbert's hospital (the land now used as Middlesbrough Football Club Training Ground, Rockcliffe).

 In 1955, the Grange was purchased by the Brothers of St John of God at St Cuthbert's hospital and used as a school for boys wishing to become hospitaller brothers.

 In 1968, the Grange was on the market again and interest was shown by a firm of builders intending to redevelop the land.  Durham County Council intervened and using a compulsory purchase order, they bought the Grange for £15,000 - a fraction of the price offered by the builders.  The Grange was then given to Hurworth Parish Council for use as a community centre which remains its function today

  1. Hurworth Grange Country Fair Committee reserves the right to make corrections and additions to the Terms and Conditions as and when necessary. Please check www.hurworthgrange.com for updates.

  2. Disabled badge holders and their drivers may park in Hurworth Academy’s staff car park. Please note that, onsite parking is limited to wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments.

  3. No exhibitor/ seller car parking is allowed at the Grange, or on site on the day of the Country Fair.

  4. Onsite and offsite (behind Hurworth Academy) car parking arrangements will be signposted and marshalled.

  5. The Hurworth Grange Country Fair raffle is open to all mainland Great Britain residents over the age of 16 (this excludes Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Islands). The tickets may not be sold to, or by a person under 16 years of age. If a ticket is sold unknowingly to a person under the age of 16, they will be exempt from the raffle and will forfeit their prize.

  6. All tickets must be paid for before being included in the raffle draw.

  7. Hurworth Grange Fair Committee take no responsibility for any lost raffle tickets.

  8. All raffle prizes will be presented at 3pm in the main show arena. Any prize winners who are unable to collect at this time will be contacted by phone to make arrangements to collect their prize from the Grange.

  9. Any raffle prizes not collected within 7 working days of the Hurworth Grange Country Fair will be donated to following Hurworth Grange events.

  10. The raffle prizes are non-transferable, and no alternatives will be provided.

  11. The result of the Raffle draw is final.

  12. Hurworth Grange Country Fair is licensed by the Gambling Commission under the 2005 Gambling Act. Responsible Person: Keith Sandick, Hurworth Grange Community Centre, 41 Hurworth Road, Hurworth-on-Tees, DL2 2BN.

  13. For any invoice issued by the Grange, unless stated otherwise, the standard payment term is 30 days.

  14. As payment is taken as confirmation of attendance, all stall holder invoice payments are required in advance of the Country Fair.

  15. Once invoice payment has been received, no refunds will be given unless the stall holder advises of exceptional circumstances for not being able to attend the Country Fair/ the event is cancelled by the Grange.

  16. Any refunds can only be issued in cash (collection from the Grange) or by cheque.
