Hurworth Wassail
Monday 17th January

The term Wassail comes from the Old Norse 'yes heill', which means 'be healthy'.

Communities gather in orchards and gardens traditionally around the old 12th night to ask the fruit trees to be productive and healthy in the year ahead, and scare away evil spirits.

Meet at the Coffee Pot at Hurworth Grange. Bring a torch if you have one.

We will hang cider soaked toast in the trees to invite the robins.
We will make noises to scare away evil spirits, bring something like pots and pans.

We will sing to the trees

Finally, we drink a toast to the orchard with warm spiced apple drinks and apple cakes which will be provided.
